Requirements

They asked for a complete backup of data from 2008 to 2023, with a total size of 467 MB. They required a comprehensive data visualization solution to replicate key views and features previously available in Universal Analytics, with a focus on audience segmentation, detailed content analysis, and flexible timeframes. The main requirements included:

  • Data Access: Access to historical data from the start of the account to the beginning of data collection.
  • Audience Segmentation: The ability to filter data based on a custom audience (“Industry Insider”). Since Looker Studio does not offer audience-based segmentation, equivalent filtering options was considered.
  • Customizable Timeframes: The ability to adjust date ranges within reports, similar to Universal Analytics dashboards.
  • Data Export: The need to export data from various views, potentially in .csv format.

Replication of Key Universal Analytics Views:

  • Audience Overview: Display audience data, although predefined sorting is not feasible.
  • Behavior Analysis: Include metrics for frequency, recency, and engagement. Mobile Overview: Visualize mobile-related data.
  • Acquisition Analysis: Provide a detailed breakdown of traffic channels, sources/mediums, and referrals.
  • Behavior Overview: Offer insights into site content, including all pages, content drill-downs, and landing pages.
  • Content Drill-Down: A critical need for detailed page-level analysis, with drill-down capabilities and channel-based filtering.

These requirements will guide the development and implementation of the data reporting solution, ensuring it meets their specific needs.

Solution

We set up a comprehensive data visualization solution in Looker Studio for them. This included providing access to historical data from the start of their account and creating custom filters to replicate their “Industry Insider” audience segment. We enabled flexible date ranges in reports, allowing them to adjust timeframes as needed. Additionally, we included the capability to export data in .csv format.

We successfully recreated key Google Analytics views, including audience data, behavior metrics, mobile performance, traffic sources, and detailed content analysis with drill-down options. This solution allowed the client to analyze their data effectively and make informed decisions.

Results

The detailed backup provided for the client’s Universal Analytics (UA) data ensured a reliable and accessible resource for ongoing analysis. The Looker Studio report offered a comprehensive view of historical data, preserving all key insights during the transition from UA. With features like date range control, aggregated scorecards, pie charts, and customizable views, the report made it easy to analyze and extract valuable insights, ensuring that no critical information was lost and providing flexibility for future updates.

Conclusion

The backup and Looker Studio report provided the client with a clear and accessible view of their Universal Analytics data. The report preserved all important insights and made it easy to analyze historical data. Features like date range selection, scorecards, charts, and filters ensured that no valuable information was lost and that the report can be easily updated in the future. This solution streamlined the transition and supported ongoing data analysis and decision-making.
