Phone Call Tracking

Phone call tracking setup that ties every call to its campaign

Your best leads often pick up the phone, and that is exactly where tracking goes dark. We set up CallRail, CTM or the platform you already use, and send qualified calls into GA4, Google Ads and your CRM.

  • Calls tied to source, campaign & keyword
  • Only qualified calls count
  • No tech work on your side

Sound familiar?

The phone rings. Your reports say nothing happened.

  • Phones ring, but GA4 shows zero calls
  • Google Ads bids on form fills and ignores callers
  • No idea which campaign or keyword drove a call
  • Call tracking installed, but numbers never swap
  • Every 10-second hang-up counted as a lead
  • Calls counted twice, once by Google Ads and once by your tool

Why it happens

Phone calls happen off your website, so GA4 never sees them

Analytics was built to count clicks and pageviews. A call starts on your site, then leaves it, and the conversion leaves with it.

  • A call leaves your website, so GA4 never sees the conversion
  • Click-to-call tags record a tap, not a conversation
  • One static number cannot tell Google Ads from SEO from Meta

Platforms we work with

Call tracking platforms we set up and connect

  • The go-to for small businesses and agencies, with native GA4 and Google Ads integrations.

  • Formerly CallTrackingMetrics. Flexible call routing and agency-friendly sub-accounts.

  • Calls, forms and chats tracked together in one lead report.

  • Enterprise call tracking built around AI conversation analytics.

  • Built for pay-per-call, call routing and high call volumes.

  • Conversation intelligence for multi-location and franchise brands.

  • Lightweight call tracking with GA4 and ad platform integrations.

  • UK-based call analytics for marketing and enterprise teams.

Something else? Google forwarding numbers, Twilio or another platform: if it can send an event or a webhook, we can connect it.

Choosing the right setup

Click-to-call, Google forwarding numbers or a call tracking platform?

Three ways to measure calls, and they are not interchangeable. Here is what each one can and cannot see.

If calls are a real share of your leads, you need a call tracking platform. Click-to-call events still earn their place as a micro-conversion, and we keep exactly one call conversion as primary in Google Ads. For the Google Ads side of the setup, see our Google Ads conversion tracking guide.

Our approach

A five-step setup, tested with real calls

  1. 01

    Call flow audit

We map every place your number appears (website, Google Business Profile, ads, print) and how calls route to your team today.

  2. 02

    Platform & number plan

We recommend a platform or set up the one you have, then plan number pools, source numbers and what counts as a qualified call.

  3. 03

    Install & number swapping

The swap script goes in through GTM with consent checks, and numbers swap by source on every page and device.

  4. 04

    Conversion wiring

Qualified calls flow to GA4 as key events, into Google Ads with the click ID, and into your CRM. One primary call conversion, no double counting.

  5. 05

    Test calls & handover

We place test calls from each channel, confirm attribution end to end, then document the setup for your team.

No technical work on your side. We sign an NDA before requesting access.

Questions

Phone call tracking FAQ

What is phone call tracking?

Phone call tracking connects inbound phone calls to the marketing that caused them. Using dynamic number insertion, each website visitor sees a tracking number tied to their session, so when they call you can see the source, campaign, keyword and landing page behind it, along with how long the call lasted and whether it turned into a lead.

Can GA4 track phone calls on its own?

Only partly. GA4 can record a tap on a click-to-call link as an event, but it cannot tell whether the call connected, how long it lasted, or that a desktop visitor dialled your number by hand. A call tracking platform fills that gap and sends qualified calls into GA4 as events matched to the visitor's session, so calls sit next to your forms and purchases in the same reports.

Which call tracking software should I use?

It depends on your call volume and how you sell. CallRail suits most small businesses and agencies, CTM (formerly CallTrackingMetrics) and WhatConverts work well for agencies reporting across many clients, Ringba is built for pay-per-call, and Invoca or Marchex fit enterprise and multi-location brands that need conversation analytics. If you already pay for a platform, we set that one up properly rather than moving you.

How do phone call conversions get into Google Ads?

There are two routes. Google forwarding numbers track calls from your ads and from Google Ads visitors on your website natively, while a call tracking platform captures the click ID behind each call and imports qualified calls into Google Ads as offline conversions. We make one route the primary conversion, so Google Ads never counts the same call twice and bids on calls that actually turned into leads.

Will call tracking numbers hurt my local SEO?

Not when they are set up correctly. On your website the swap happens in the visitor's browser, so your main number stays in the page source. On your Google Business Profile the usual practice is to use a tracking number as the primary number and keep your main number as an additional number, which keeps your business details consistent across the web.

How much does call tracking setup cost?

Our setup work is fixed-scope and fixed-price with no retainers, and it is separate from your call tracking platform's own subscription. If you have one contained problem, such as numbers not swapping or calls missing from GA4, there is a $299 quick fix. For a full setup, tell us your platform and your channels and we will come back with a clear scope and price.
