01 The broken state

The site's GTM dataLayer exposed only total purchase values, with no booking IDs, hostel names, or check-in dates, so reservation data could not be tracked in the detail the team needed. The newsletter subscription confirmation event was also configured directly in GA4 rather than through GTM, which prevented proper event-parameter tracking.

02 What we changed

  1. Configured GA4 with purchase event tracking covering all bookings and reservations
  2. Used DOM Element variables in Google Tag Manager to capture purchase events and the data points missing from the dataLayer
  3. Migrated the newsletter subscription confirmation event from GA4 into GTM to enable full parameter tracking
  4. Built Looker Studio dashboards for both the internal marketing team and affiliate hostel partners to support marketing and budget decisions

03 The outcome

GA4 and GTM implementation for HI Hostels Canada that captured full booking detail (IDs, hostel names, check-in dates) and fed Looker Studio dashboards for the marketing team and affiliate hostel partners.
